The aim of New Roots Scotland is to help asylum seekers and refugees integrate into Scottish society and enable them to play their full part in the economy.

There are approximately 10,000 refugees and asylum seekers living in Scotland, almost entirely in Glasgow.
Just over 4000 of the population are refugees; the others are asylum seekers.

It is estimated that that approximately 80% of the refugee/asylum seeker population in Scotland is educated to higher education level.  However, the majority of are unable to take up work and contribute to the Scottish economy for a variety of reasons,  including problems in verifying work qualifications, insufficient places in English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes, immigration regulations and limited experience of working in a UK setting.
